Brisbane Airtrain

Brisbane Airtrain is responsible for the design, build, finance, operation and maintenance of the Brisbane Airport Rail Link, Queensland, Australia.

The project involved the construction of an 8.4km airport spur from the existing Queensland Rail network to the International and Domestic airport terminals, giving access to the Brisbane Central Business District and through to the Gold Coast.

Airtrain is fully integrated into the Queensland Rail network allowing passengers to purchase tickets from Airtrain for any destination. Airtrain also offers a range of premium door-to-door services and tourist packages. Queensland Rail provides the integrated train services for the rail link under a train services agreement with Airtrain.

John Laing acquired the asset in 2000 as part of the Hyder Portfolio. Construction and commissioning was completed ahead of the scheduled operation’s start date in May 2001. The concession contract runs for 35 years from the completion of construction.

The design and construction of the rail link was undertaken by Transfield Pty Limited. The operation and maintenance of the link is undertaken by Transfield Services Limited.

The project’s financial arrangements were restructured in 2005, to ensure a sound basis for the ongoing successful operation of the project.
