Celebrating 160 years

John Laing plc, the specialist developer, investor and operator of public sector infrastructure assets, celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2008. It was in 1848 that its founder, James Laing, grandfather of the eponymous John, first started his business as a local builder in a village near Carlisle, in the north of England.

For more than 150 years the company has grown from its humble beginnings of fixing gutters and plastering walls to undertake multi-million pound projects until, in 2001, John Laing sold off its construction and house building businesses to concentrate on investments procured through Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) and Public Private Partnerships (PPP).

Consequently, the John Laing which operates in the 21st century global economy, combines its skill in the management of development risk, project financing, asset management and operations with those of its chosen partners. This has led to the company establishing an enviable reputation as a market leader in the privately financed form of infrastructure renewal and modernisation now recognised as a key element of public sector procurement policy.

Although James would no longer recognise the business models on which the global company now operates, the same core principles of innovation, flexibility and reliability are the cornerstones on which the company is founded and the qualities by which customers have, over more than a century and a half, come to know the company.
